We believe in the value and values of mentoring.”

The Process

Becoming a Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentor is as simple as 1-2-3:

The Application and Assessment Process

The order of the steps in the application and assessment process can vary from agency to agency, but the following is a general overview of the process. The volunteer applicant:

  • Submits a written application to their local agency including submission of a signed confidentiality agreement
  • Submits a police record check including a vulnerable sector check, three references, and medical clearance (if applicable)
  • Participates in a one-to-one interview with an Intake Worker at the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency
  • Depending on the program, may be asked to participate in an assessment of their home environment
  • Successfully completes an orientation and pre-match training
  • Is notified of their acceptance/non-acceptance with a formal letter
  • If accepted as a volunteer the mentor continues onto the matching process

The Matching Process

(Traditional Big Brother Big Sister Programs)

Similar to the application and assessment process, the matching process can vary from agency to agency and from program to program, but in general:
  • It is predetermined by the agency that the Big and Little will be matched based on similar personalities, interests and the needs of the child
  • The Caseworker, now familiar with the volunteer, as well as the child or youth waiting to be matched, will schedule a Match Selection Meeting with the volunteer
  • The volunteer will consider the suitability of 2-3 profiles presented and determine the best match for them
  • The Caseworker will then contact the family to confirm the match
  • Once confirmed, the Caseworker arranges for a meeting between the child or youth, the volunteer mentor, and the parent or guardian
  • If everything goes smoothly, the match can begin!
